How to See the Film...
Dare Not Walk Alone is playing in Manhattan, New York, from Friday, August 22 to 28.
WHERE: The Pioneer Theater, East 3rd Street between Avenues A and B (closer to A) New York, New York.
WHEN: 7:00PM nightly. Tickets online here.
We announce all screenings on the blog with the label: screening. There are screenings at Notre Dame University in October.
There are several ways to see the film if no showing is currently scheduled in your area.
First, you could ask your local cinema if they are interested in screening the film. You can point them to the trailer and reviews (but bear in mind many reviewers only watch the film on DVD and so they don't experience how powerfully it comes across in theaters).
Then tell the cinema that our theatrical distribution company is Indican Pictures.
The address and phone and fax are on the right. They will be happy to discuss an engagement.
A second approach, and this is quite exciting, does not require contacts in the movie business to put on a screening of the film. If you would like to show the film at your college, school, church, youth group, library, society, or similar venue, you can contact Shaun Hill at Indican and she can tell you how to book this type of event. (There is a charge for such screenings.)
Depending on timing, the film's director may be available for post-screening Q&A sessions, class-room discussions, and so on. Feel free to email us directly if you would like a speaker to attend your event (you will normally need to cover transportation, accommodation, and a modest honorarium). Email information is available here.
WHY NO DVD?
Q. Many people have asked when Dare Not Walk Alone will be available on DVD.
A. The answer is "after the theatrical release is concluded."
The reality of the movie business today is that showing the movie in theaters (the theatrical release) works as an advertising campaign for the DVD release. Although you might be willing to pay for a DVD of the movie right now, the reality is that millions of Americans will never hear about, let alone buy this film on DVD, unless it is carried by the big retailers. And the big retailers won't carry a film like ours unless it has some good quotes from big name publciations on the cover, like "Powerful slice of roiling American history" -- Los Angeles Times.
We now have that quote. We are working to earn others by playing at cinemas in big cities. It takes a lot of time and money to do this, but we think it makes sense to get the film as widely distributed as possible. Right now our best guess is that the film will be out on DVD before the end of October, 2008.

Outdoor Screening?
Yes! You can actually do a pretty good screening with an LCD projector and a large white sheet strung between two palm trees (as seen here--of course, dry weather and a lack of strong breezes does help).
This shot was taken when students at Flagler College in Saint Augustine used an outdoor showing on the school campus to raise over $400 for the Coley family.
Jacksonville Film Festival
Lots of people turned up on a sunny Saturday morning and the feedback was excellent. DNWA was much talked about during many of the other festival events. Our thanks to Jean Tait for the invitation and to Cynthia Kane for her words of encouragement.
Florida Film Festival, Enzian Theater, Maitland, Florida
At 11 A.M. on Sunday, March 26, 2006. A full house despite the (hopefully not intentional) poor timing. Great post-screening Q&A and excellent feedback.
Independent Black Film Festival, Atlanta, March 2006
Response to the screening on Tuesday March 14, at The Cinefé Movie Theatre, Lithona, was very enthusiastic. We were honored by the presence of several marchers from 1964, including JT Wilson of the SCLC.
Cinequest San Jose Film Festival, March, 2006
The film was so well received that the organizers added a third screening to meet demand.
